  • Kolkata: Following the directives issued by the Calcutta High Court, a team from Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) along with a team of about 100 police personnel on Monday finally managed to initiate work to demolish an illegally set-up two storied club building at Nayapatti. The authorities had previously failed twice to demolish the structure following resistance from locals.

“The tin shed from the roof has been removed. We are expecting to demolish the entire structure in the next few days,” said a BMC official. The civic authorities could not bulldoze the building from outside as several other adjacent residential buildings would have got affected.

Earlier, the civic authorities had sent self-evacuation and demolition notices to developers of 322 unauthorised buildings in different areas. But, officials said the instructions were not followed. Local councillor, Jaydev Naskar, said he had urged the members of the club not to stage any agitation. Last year, BMC had lodged around 150 fresh FIRs of unauthorised building constructions, mostly in Rajarhat-Gopalpur area.

The civic authorities were in an average receiving around 100 letters from the banks every month for verification, out of which in around 20% to 25% of cases the buildings were found to be illegally constructed.
