• Mamata Banerjee on bed rest, TMC no. 2 carries on with rallies targets state BJP chief

  • TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Monday urged residents of Balurghat constituency to register their protest against the sitting BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar for stopping central funds to the state.

While TMC chairperson Mamata Banerjee has been advised by doctors for a seven-day bed rest following her fall in her house, party’s number two Abhishek Banerjee was seen continuing holding party programmes as per schedule.

Defying the advise of the doctors, Banerjee, with her head bandaged, visited Garden Reach area in the city to take stock of the situation following the collapse of an under-construction building.

Addressing a public meeting at Gangaranpur in South Dinajpur district, Banerjee said, “This is not just an election to elect the Prime Minister of the country or to change the party in power at the Centre. In 2014, when Narendra Modi became the PM, the TMC had won the Balurghat constituency. However, BJP’s Sukanta Majumdar won the seat in 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Since then, the BJP leader did nothing for the people in this constituency.”

Attacking the BJP state president, Banerjee said, “In fact, he is responsible for stopping funds to the state. Leaders like him wrote letters to the Centre, asking it to stop funds meant for the people. He once said that funds will be released if he makes one phone call. If he had such power then why didn’t he stand by the people in his constituency? Therefore, this is an election to register your protest against these leaders, take your revenge through your votes.”

The BJP did not immediately react to Banerjee’s remarks.
