• Worry over lack of supervision

  • Kolkata: An official of the KMC’s buildings department said builders of the G+4 structure had flouted all regulations and construction norms. “There are two other buildings that have been similarly constructed. One building has tilted. Others, with poor foundation, may also suffer a similar fate. If we allow a building to come up on the plot, it may mean another disaster,” he said.

The department’s officials said they were worried about the quality of construction materials used in the buildings that are still standing and lack of supervision during construction to ensure basic norms were adhered to. “Instead of using 12mm TMT bars in columns, the promoter had used 10mm bars,” said an official.

The civic authorities are also concerned about the possibility of another building coming up on the site — illegally — after the dust settles. Civic engineers posted in the borough have been asked to maintain constant vigil after the plot is cleaned up. “We have instructed our officials to ensure that this plot and other vacant plots in the vicinity remain so,” said a KMC official.

KMC on Tuesday joined hands with NDRF personnel in clearing up debris at the site. “We have deployed an earth-mover machine to clear the debris,” said a civic official.
