  • Congress state unit chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday said his party would soon be announcing candidates for seven constituencies in West Bengal for the upcoming seven-phase Lok Sabha elections. There are 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

The Baharampur MP broke his silence over the Congress’ list of candidates after the party’s seat-sharing talks with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for Bengal. On Tuesday, CPI(M) state secretary Mohammed Salim called on AICC leaders. According to party leaders, it was decided that while Congress would contest 12 seats in the state, the remaining constituencies are likely to be split between the Left Front and its ally the Indian Secular Front (ISF).

Talking to reporters in Barhampur on Wednesday, Chowdhury said, “You know all the names that are roaming around. Our leadership will announce the names of candidates from seven constituencies — Baharampur, Jangipur, Raigunj, Maldah-Uttar, Maldah-Dakshin, Birbhum and Purulia. I will contest from Baharampur, Nepal Mahato from Purulia and Manyrtaja Hossain from Jangipur.”

Meanwhile, former cricketer Yusuf Pathan, who will contest from Baharampur on a TMC ticket, reached Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata on Wednesday night. Speaking to media persons at the airport, Pathan said, “I have returned to Kolkata. Now, we will hold a meeting and plan how to move forward.” Pathan is scheduled to hold a padayatra, press conference and a public meeting at Baharampur on Thursday.
