  • Hours after a 31-year-old man was found hanging in Subhashgram area of South 24 Parganas district, his family alleged that he “died by suicide over panic due to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA),” police said on Thursday.

Police said the deceased, Debashish Sengupta, was a resident of Netaji Nagar area of Kolkata. He went to his maternal grandparents’ house in South 24 Parganas district two days ago, they added. “On Wednesday night, his family found him hanging and took him to a hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” police said.

Debashish’s father Tapan Sengupta alleged, “My son was worried about how he would prove his citizenship after CAA was implemented. He often asked what he would do if his citizenship was revoked.”

In his complaint to the Netaji Nagar Police, Tapan claimed “…Since the announcement of the notification of CAA, my son had been suffering from mental trauma and agony and was also in acute fear psychosis for not having all the required documents as prescribed in the said notification…”

State Finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said, “We have repeatedly said that attempts are being made to introduce CAA and NRC illegally in the country. These laws are undemocratic and will spread panic…Thirty-one-year-old Debashish died by suicide in fear of CAA. Is the PM watching?”

A TMC delegation led by state minister Shashi Panja met Debashish’s family on Thursday.

CPI(M)’s Jadavpur candidate Srijan Bhattacharya also met the family. “The TMC and the BJP are trying to play dirty politics with CAA,” he said.

The BJP, however, blamed the TMC’s “anti-CAA campaign” for Debashish’ death. BJP leader Prannoy Roy said, “The CM is responsible for this death. An FIR should be lodged against her.”
