  • Kolkata: A 57-year-old doctor, Deepa Halder, who had a fight with her husband, also a doctor, on Saturday night, was found hanging at her home in Behala’s Diamond Park on Sunday morning.

Alerted by a call from her husband, Susovan Halder, cops took the body to M R Bangur Hospital. They held back the husband for questioning at the police station till he was allowed to return home on Sunday evening.

No suicide note was found. Cops have started an unnatural death case and are awaiting the postmortem report.

“We have learnt there was a discord between the two last evening over multiple issues. We are probing into the case to find out what had exactly happened that led to her death,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.

Halder was employed at Joka ESI Hospital but had taken voluntary retirement last year. She was focused on doing social service in the neighbourhood. She was closely associated with the Durga Puja organised in the neighbourhood and was a prominent face in the locality.

“She was a very dignified and confident woman. It’s difficult to accept she has died by suicide,” said a neighbour.

TOI contacted her husband, who practises at a private hospital and has a chamber at James Long Sarani-MG Road crossing. However, he refused to speak on the issue.

The couple has a son, also a doctor, who works in London.

“They seemed like a normal couple. Even on Saturday, she gave me two packets of ‘abir’ for my children. I can’t believe she is no more,” said Bina Pramanik, their domestic help.
