  • Kolkata: Cops have arrested a bank official — identified as Soumya Kanti Jana — in connection to the murder of 70-year-old Subodh Sarkar, whose blood-soaked body, stashed in a red trolley bag, was found on the banks of a canal in New Town on Saturday. Cops said the accused has confessed to killing the elderly man to avoid repayment of Rs 7 lakh that he had borrowed from the deceased.

After killing Sarkar at his Belghoria home between 4.30pm and 5.30pm, Jana had booked an intercity app cab and left the home loading the body in a trolley bag at the cab’s boot around 7.30pm, cops added.

The accused dumped the body behind Karigari Bhavan in New Town around 9pm. While he was fleeing towards his home in Egra, the cab was stopped at a police naka-check point as cops noticed the blood soaked trunk.

“The man had told the driver that he was delivering some old books to a relative. We have taken the driver and his friend’s statement and let them go,” said Manav Singla, DC New Town of Bidhannagar Commissionerate. Police said Sarkar had a bank account at the private bank where Jana worked. After selling off a property in Odisha, Sarkar had received Rs 80 lakh, of which he had loaned Rs 7 lakh to Jana.
