After receiving information about the body, personnel from Kolkata police’s homicide department and the local Hastings police station reached the spot near Trikon Park. The police said the deceased was around 32 years old and was dressed in pants and a shirt.

They said, prima facie, it appeared that he was beaten up as he had injury marks on his body. They registered a case of unnatural death at the Hastings police station.

The police did not rule out the possibility that he was murdered at some other place, and the killers left the body at the Victoria Memorial grounds. They started checking footage from CCTV cameras in and around the area.

In a similar incident in 2010, an engineer’s body was found in the pond of Victoria Memorial. It was later established that he had ended his life.
