  • Hours after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) filed a complaint of poll code violation with the Election Commission (EC) against Dilip Ghosh, the BJP’s Bardhaman-Durgapur candidate, over alleged derogatory comments against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, BJP national president JP Nadda on Tuesday evening issued a show-cause notice to him.

In a letter issued to Ghosh, the BJP central leadership said that his statement was “unparliamentary and against the party’s tradition”.\

Ghosh, the former president of the BJP’s West Bengal unit, is alleged to have made the purported comments while speaking to mediapersons on Tuesday. He could not be reached for his comments.

A 10-member team of the TMC is scheduled to visit the Election Commission headquarters in Kolkata on Wednesday over the issue.

In the complaint to the EC, the TMC stated, “Your attention is drawn towards Mr Ghosh’s derogatory words that are reproduced here: English transcript- ‘Didi giye Goa te bole ami Goa r mey, Tripura et ami Tripura r mey, baap to thik korun, jar tar mey howa thik noy’. English translation- ‘When Didi goes to Goa she becomes Goa’s daughter, in Tripura she says I am Tripura’s daughter, decide who is your father, this is not right’…’

The party also attached a link to the video of Ghosh purportedly making the comments.

“Such demeaning comments not only lack decorum but also exhibit a blatant disregard for the dignity of a prominent political figure. Such remarks not only attempt to undermine the stature of Smt. Mamata Banerjee but also directly attacked her personal character and modesty, which amounts to blatant violation of the MCC,” the letter further read.

“It is expected that our political representatives engage in responsible and respectful dialogue, regardless of ideological differences or political affiliations. Mr. Ghosh’s comments not only cross the boundaries of decency but also perpetuate a culture of misogyny and disrespect towards women in positions of power,” the letter added.

In the letter, the TMC urged the EC to “a) Issue direction(s) in order to refrain Dilip Ghosh and other BJP members/candidates from making/spreading such personal objectionable/disrespectful remarks against Mamata Banerjee and any other members/candidates of All India Trinamool Congress (AITC); b) Immediate action against Dilip Ghosh for blatant violation of the Model Code of Conduct and making such distorted and disrespectful statements against Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal”.
