Dr Jadunath Mitra, 78, and his wife Mandira stayed in a house in GD Block in Sector 3, Salt Lake, an area that falls under the jurisdiction of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. On Wednesday morning, when the Mitras failed to open the door after their domestic help arrived and rang the bell, she alerted the neighbours. The neighbours broke open the door and found Mandira’s body. Dr Jadunath was unconscious and was later admitted to a hospital in a critical condition.

The police are investigating if Mandira was murdered, if Jadunath attempted suicide, and if any outsider was involved.

Last week, the body of Subodh Sarkar, who was in his 60s, was found stuffed inside a trolley bag dumped behind Karigori Bhawan in New Town.
