• Relief for Kolkata as a rainy weekend on anvil, mercury to hover around 30°C

  • Kolkata is likely to see rain from Saturday, and maximum temperatures will hover around 30 degrees Celsius in most parts of West Bengal. On Thursday, the city might see a slight rise in temperature with wind speeds of 16 kmph.

    On Wednesday, the city’s maximum temperature reached 34 degrees Celsius during the daytime under a partly cloudy sky. The maximum humidity was 94 per cent. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the daytime temperature will gradually rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next three days.

    On Thursday, light rain with thunderstorms is likely to occur at one or two places in Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia. From Saturday, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) are likely to occur at one or two places in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Kolkata, Jhargram, West Midnapore, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia. From Sunday, other places like Bankura, West Burdwan, East Burdwan, Purulia, Hooghly, Kolkata, and Howrah might experience thunderstorms with moderate rainfall.

    According to the IMD, the maximum temperature recorded during Wednesday was 33.4 degrees Celsius at Baharampur, Sriniketan, and Krishnagar, 34 degrees Celsius at Burdwan, 35.8 degrees Celsius at Purulia, 36.8 degrees Celsius at Bishnupur and Bankura, and 37 degrees Celsius at Midnapore.

    Meanwhile, Darjeeling has been experiencing a constant minimum temperature of 9 degrees Celsius, while Kalimpong has been at 14 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature in Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Siliguri has been hovering around 26-27 degrees Celsius, with nighttime temperatures hitting 18-19 degrees Celsius. Light to moderate rain has been reported in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Coochbehar, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda, and is expected to continue until this weekend.
