  • Rekha Patra,  the BJP candidate from Bashirhat Lok Sabha seat and one of the woman protesters from Sandeshkhali who had alleged sexual harassment, on Thursday lodged a complaint with the National Commission of Women and the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, after the Trinamool Congress alleged that Patra availed benefits of the state government’s health insurance project — Swasthya Sathi.

Targetting Patra on social media, the TMC posted on X (earlier Twitter), “Caught red-handed!.@BJP4India’s MP candidate from Basirhat, Rekha Patra, plays the ultimate game of hypocrisy, enjoying the benefits of @MamataOfficial’s schemes while aligning herself with Delhi’s JOMIDARS. PM @narendramodi, the next time you call her, don’t forget to inquire about her Swasthya Sathi card. It might help you understand how our leader’s brainchild, Swasthya Sathi, surpasses the failed Ayushman Bharat scheme.”

After the TMC’s post, party IT cell chief and candidate from Tamluk constituency Debangshu Bhattacharya, through his social media handle also highlighted the same and claimed that Patra had availed the state-sponsored health insurance scheme in 2021.

PM Narendra Modi recently called Patra and called her “shakti swaroopa” (a manifestation of power).

The complaint letter read, “My client is a resident of Sandeshkhali and has been at the forefront of the protest against the likes of Shahjahan Sheikh, Shibu Hazra and other goons who had held the entire area of Sandeshkhali at ransom through threats and perpetrating sexual assaults upon women. It is also pertinent to mention herein that my client belongs to the Scheduled Caste community…”

“Recently, by way of a post on the Facebook account of Debangshu Bhattacharyya, the TMC candidate from Tamluk, he has posted the private details of my client such as phone number, bank account details, Swasthya Sathi scheme details as well as the Duare Sarkar scheme details, which is a clear violation of the right of privacy of my client above named as well as outraging of my client’s modesty due to making public her personal details…” the complaint letter read.

“…you are forthwith requested to order an enquiry and take immediate steps against Debangshu Bhattacharyya… for violation of the right of privacy of my client, outraging her modesty and violation of the provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Protection (Prevention of Atrocities) Act…” the letter added.

Responding to BJP’s complaint,  NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma posted on X, “Is @MamataOfficial is paying from her own pocket? That’s taxpayers money and is for every citizen of west Bengal. Is it only for @AITCofficial workers? And what do you mean by Delhi’s Jomidars? Is West Bengal not part of India? You people behave as if Momta Benarji own the state…’

Debangshu Bhattacharya could not be reached for his comments. BJP leader Amit Malviya posted on X, “Shame on Mamata Banerjee…TMC stoops to a new low and officially leaks sensitive government data, including personal details of Rekha Patra… TMC has to take the blame for any eventuality….Urge @ECISVEEP to take immediate steps, to ensure personal data of all residents is safe.”

Taking a dig at the NCW chairperson’s post, TMC’s Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose on X pointed out, “Would be good if the chief of the National Commission of Women knew how to spell the name of India’s only woman chief minister.”   — WITH PTI
