    Times of India | 2 April 2024
  • Kolkata: For the third time in a row this year, cops have found fake call centres routing their profits, by duping victims settled abroad, through initial bitcoins and then the hawala route through Dubai and Delhi. Cops have now decided to write to the IT department and other agencies for a solution to try and cut off this illegal financial network.

Another accused involved in this fraud – where mostly American citizens were targeted – have been arrested by Kolkata Police’s Anti Rowdy Section. The accused has been identified as Mohammad Tariq, a resident of Tiljala. According to cops, he was the mastermind behind bringing the fraudulently stolen dollars from US to Kolkata. “He first brought the dollars to Dubai and deposited them in different e-wallets. They were converted into cryptocurrency and brought to India. The cryptocurrency was converted into rupees and hawala routes were used to bring the money to Kolkata,”said an officer.
