• Cops alert parents on AI fake extortion calls

  • Kolkata: The Cyber Cell of Kolkata Police wants you not to get alarmed even if you suddenly hear your child’s cries over the phone. Chances are that the cyber crooks at the other end might be using Artificial Intelligence to scare you and extort money from you.

Cops have warned parents not to get worried and instead call up all resources to check on the status of the child.“Call the nearest police station or 100 number if necessary to verify the authenticity of the phone call instead of getting alarmed by hearing your child crying on the phone,” the cops tweeted in the DC (cybercrime) Kolkata Police thread.

Cops have also warned against getting perturbed when getting calls in the name of cops. Using a meme featuring the legendary Feluda, cops said: “Don’t be unduly afraid if someone calls you with a police identity. Verify the authenticity and if necessary, dial 100 or contact the nearest police station. Kolkata Police is with you on your side,” they tweeted.

Both forms of cyber threat have flooded Kolkata in the entire month of March with dozens of complaints and around Rs 80 lakh have already been lost to cyber crooks after victims panicked and acceded to the extortion.

“The ‘Digital Arrest’ scam involves sophisticated tactics where scammers impersonate law enforcement officials to manipulate victims,” said DC (Cyber) Abhishek Modi.
