• Vijender Singh joins BJP, fought 2019 elections as Congress candidate

  • In what is called another shock for Congress, boxer and Olympic medalist Vijender Singh joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday ahead of the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With this, Singh has ended his alliance with Congress, under which he had contested 2019 polls from South Delhi constituency. The 38-year-old boxer is expected to contest extensively for the BJP in Haryana and western UP where the Jat community make a majority of their population. Singh himself belongs to the Jat community. Addressing the media, Vijender said, “I have joined BJP today for the development of the country and to serve the people...” and the athlete called it a “kind of homecoming.”Vijender Singh was the first Indian boxer to have won a bronze medal in 2008 Beijing Olympics. He has also taken home silver medals at the 2006 and 2014 Commonwealth Games and bronze medals at the 2010 edition of the Games as well as the 2009 World Championships.
