Kolkata: A fire broke out inside an empty elevator pit in the main building at Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata on Thursday. No one was injured and none of the patients had to be evacuated.
Relatives of patients in the medicine department on the third floor of the building were the first to notice smoke coming out of the lift shaft. The fire brigade was alerted around 3pm.Two fire engines doused the flames in half-and-hour. Garbage in the elevator pit had caught fire and the smoke had spread up, said a fireman. “Thankfully it was a small fire but the smoke and the siren wails spead a bit of panic,” said Ratan Das, a visitor to the hospital.— Biplab Bhattacharjee
