  • KOLKATA: Two friends from Purulia who worked at a private firm in Kolkata were drowned to death while attending an immersion ceremony early on Sunday.

Bishal Biswas (26) and Soumyajit Banerjee (25) along with two other friends were at Natherbagan ghat in Beniatolla for immersion of a Shiva idol with other neighbours from Dum Dum where they stayed on rent.

Police said the four friends were chatting among themselves after the immersion when Banerjee somehow slipped and fell in the Hooghly river. Biswas jumped in to rescue him but both were drowned.

A large team of river traffic police began a search operation looking for them and were able to fish out their bodies after some time. They were declared dead on being taken to Medical College and Hospital.
