  • Kolkata: Burglars killed two street dogs that used to be fed and sheltered by a family in New Alipore’s Sahapur Colony before breaking into the empty three-storey house and stealing gold ornaments, cash, two mobile phones and a laptop.

The incident was reported in the early hours of Sunday when Rohan Kundu (24) and his mother had gone to a relative’s home in Ranaghat. His father Sanjib — who lives in another flat in the same area — discovered the theft when he found the house ransacked around 6.30 am.

The Kundus have been living in this neighbourhood for several years. While they owned a three-storey house in Sahapur Colony, where Rohan lived with his mother, Sanjib slept in a flat they had bought in the same locality. The youth alleged there have been five instances of theft in the area over the last two months.

Rohan had gone to Ranaghat with his mother on Saturday evening and was on his way home alone when he received the call from his father.

“We felt our house was safe as the two dogs always used to guard it and bark every time strangers approached. They were like our family. It’s a pity that the innocent animals had to lose their lives while trying to save our home. We plead to cops to nab the culprits and take necessary action,” said Rohan.

Probing into the case, cops said they already have some leads and are tracking the culprits to arrest them at the earliest.

“We are checking the CCTV cameras in the area and are trying to trace the culprits. We have some leads and are developing them,” said a Kolkata Police officer.

The officer also added that the police have received the complaint about the dogs’ death as well but are probing if the two incidents are related.
