  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Police cyber cell on Thursday sent a notice to at least three X users — and a social media group — for posting objectionable videos in the name of chief minister Mamata Banerjee, using the same to create a “highly objectionable” meme mocking the CM’s injury and sharing it online.

Cops have also warned them of legal action for posting “offensive, malicious content that can cause disharmony in society” and have asked them to remove the posts.

All these notices have been issued on X itself where the account owner has been asked to share his/her identity. “You are directed to immediately disclose your identity including name and residence. If the information sought is not revealed, you shall be liable for legal action u/s 42 CrPC. Cyber PS, Lalbazar,” the post read. Incidentally, all the X handles that have been issued notices blatantly flaunt their right-wing links.

The cops have taken help from X and Facebook to delete some accounts for spreading hatred and hurting community sentiments. “We are keeping an eye out for questionable and objectionable materials on social media. The most objectionable items get shared on X, followed by Facebook. We are taking suo motu cognizance of such attempts to use social media to create rifts and tension,” said an officer.

The state cyber cell has now begun demarcating each fake or inciting video and accessing its impact.
