  • Kolkata: Doctors at Medica Hospitalconducted an AI (Artificial Intelligence) powered HoloLens surgery on a 50-year-old woman who needed knee replacement surgery. This new technology has an added advantage over robotic surgery as doctors can use implants from any manufacturer. Since this was the first AI used in such a surgery in India, the procedure was telecast live to around 400 orthopaedic/joint replacement surgeons from across the country.

The patient was suffering from acute arthritis resulting in significant deformity with inwards growth. The condition had affected her mobility severely, caused intense pain and rendered her unable to perform even daily chores. Vikash Kapoor and Manish Shah decided for knee replacement surgery, usually avoided on younger patients as this was the only option left.

“The HoloLens technology is a composite mix of reality, AI, and the internet. It recreates the image of the bone in the air, which is mapped, and we see it with a special type of 3D virtual image, which is projected in the air by HoloLens,” said joint replacement and arthroscopic surgeon Vikash Kapoor, vice-chairman, group director, Medica Superspecialty Hospital. “Furthermore, the use of this technology adds a cross-checking system driven by AI, guaranteeing constant precision during the procedure.”
