    Times of India | 11 April 2024
  • Kolkata: The state higher education department sent a letter to the Raj Bhavan on Wednesday to withdraw the appointment order of four vice-chancellors, posted on the latter’s X handle on April 5. The Raj Bhavan post stated that the governor and chancellor, C V Ananda Bose, had appointed four interim vice-chancellors in four vacant state-aided universities in Bengal.

The letter quoted the Supreme Court’s Oct 6 order: “No appointment of ad hoc or acting vice-chancellor shall be made in any university till further orders.” The letter stated that the unilateral appointment of interim VCs by the chancellor was “unlawful” and “contrary” to the direction given by the apex court and the state govt would bring a contempt case against the chancellor before the Supreme Court, hearing on which is likely on April 16.

The higher education department advised the Raj Bhavan to withdraw the appointment notice, and requested to consult the state education minister Bratya Basu, as per the court order. tnn
