• Potholes on Salt Lake’s newly repaired roads

  • Kolkata: Potholes have developed on several roads of Salt Lake that had been repaired just around six months ago. The situation is compounded by the Lok Sabha election model code of conduct, which prohibits any new repair work until July.

TOI on Friday found one such stretch in front of the CGO complex, which had been repaired last Nov, in a damaged state.Another stretch near Tank 16 was also found in a poor shape.

Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) conducted repairs last year and earlier this year. The authorities first repaired some of the damaged main arterial roads and then took up repairing the lanes inside the blocks. Despite these efforts, condition of a few stretches has already started to deteriorate.

“Repair work has been completed in most places. Whatever work is left from the previously floated tenders would be done as per routine maintenance,” said an official.

However, officials also mentioned that no new road repair will be initiated now as the election model code of conduct is now in place. This delay means significant repairs cannot start until July, by when the monsoon season will arrive and further damage the stretches.

Locals said there were a few stretches in Salt Lake which got damaged frequently. One such stretch is between tank 5 and Baisakhi Island crossing. Residents have time and again expressed dissatisfaction with the temporary nature of road patchwork, suggesting that repairs should be carried out consistently throughout the year so that it lasts long.
