  • Kolkata: After mahout Samudra Rabha was killed by an elephant at Iskcon Mayapur last week, the temple authorities have decided to relocate two elephants, Bishnupriya and Lakshmipriya. The Iskcon Mayapur Executive Board convened on April 10 to discuss this. Of the potential locations, only Vantara within Reliance’s Jamnagar Refinery Complex was disclosed by Iskcon’s vice president in Kolkata, Radharaman Das.

Gajender Kumar Sharma, country director of World Animal Protection in India, said: “We strongly maintain that elephants are wild animals and should be cherished where they belong in the wild.”

Aritra Kshettry, elephant head at WWF-India, said due to the current weather conditions, it would be better to rehabilitate them within Bengal. He also said if the jumbos were to be relocated to Jaldapara or Gorumara, they would require retraining. tnn
