  • Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Friday night announced that Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal will provide Rs 1.2 lakh to rehabilitate people who lost their houses in a storm in the Jalpaiguri district on March 31.

In a Facebook post, Banerjee stated that relief would be provided to the people despite roadblocks created by the Election Commission and the BJP.

“The reception I got from the people today makes one clear: Trinamool will bloom in Jalpaiguri. I made a promise that GoWB will work in mission mode to complete Dhupguri Sub-divisional hospital, a railway overbridge in Mekliganj and a bridge connecting Mal & Kranti blocks,” he said.

“I, along with our delegation, also met the storm-affected families of Jalpaiguri & assured them that regardless of the roadblocks created by ECI & BJP, GoWB will provide ₹1.2 lakh to rehabilitate the shelterless. No one can stop us from serving our Ma, Mati, Manush!” Banerjee announced.

On Friday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said during her election rallies in northern Bengal that her government would compensate the storm-affected people.

“We had sought permission from the Election Commission of India so that the administration can help these people. However, no permission was granted to the administration. Later, we found that there are provisions to extend such assistance to people in case of disaster. Thus, the state government will pay the first instalment to them,” said Mamata Banerjee at a public meeting in Dinhata of the Cooch Behar district.

Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee visited the storm-affected areas and interacted with the people. Earlier, he had led a delegation of TMC leaders to Raj Bhavan in Kolkata to complain against the poll panel for not allowing the state government to provide financial assistance to the people.

Jalpaiguri goes to Lok Sabha elections 2024 in the first phase on April 19. The TMC has fielded Nirmal Chandra Ray against the BJP’s sitting MP Dr Jayanta Roy.
