  • Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday claimed that Bengal was the safest place in India.

Referring to the recent arrest of two suspects in the Bengaluru Rameshwaram Café blast case in West Bengal, Banerjee said at a public meeting in Jalpaiguri district, “Yesterday, some people said that Bengal is not safe anymore. They have forgotten that Bengaluru is in another state… Those who have been arrested are residents of Karnataka. They had spent only two hours at Contai in Purba Medinipur district where the gaddar (allegedly referring to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari) lives. With the help of our police, they were arrested within two hours. This is Bengal, the safest place in India.”

The man who allegedly planted an IED at Bengaluru’s Rameshwaram Cafe on March 1 as well as the mastermind who planned the blast were arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) from their hideout near Kolkata on Friday.

Central intelligence agencies, and state police agencies of West Bengal, Telangana, Karnataka, and Kerala were involved in the operation.

Ever since the arrests were made, BJP leaders have been accusing the state government of turning Bengal into a haven for criminals and terrorists.

Meanwhile, Banerjee claimed that the BJP will not even win 200 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

“What have they [BJP] done for North Bengal? Do not fall prey to PM Narendra Modi’s ‘guarantees’. These are nothing but electoral jumla (false promises). You (BJP) have destroyed the country’s Constitution drafted by Babasaheb Ambedkar. People will not forgive you,” said Banerjee.

Voting for three North Bengal seats – Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri – will be held in the first phase on April 19.
