• 9 arrested in 2 investment fraud cases

  • Kolkata: The police have arrested nine persons in two separate cases of investment fraud carried out through either WhatsApp or Telegram apps or controlled from a fake call centre.

    One Adarsh Sonkar from Burrabazar area was arrested on Friday night for allegedly duping a victim of Rs 23.3 lakh on the pretext of offering high returns on investments. He has been sent to police custody till April 30, cops said.In the second case, a bank fraud section team from the detective department arrested eight individuals in a raid on a fake call centre being run from Arihant Building under Park Street PS. They allegedly promised bogus insurance returns.

    Cops said citizens were investing their hard earned money in various online share trading websites or applying for loans online. Last week, many victims in the city lost Rs 3 crore. Cops have already made the breakthroughs in three cases. In most cases, the modus operandi used involved creating two share trading websites that had required permissions but were fakes of the original ones. In both cases, cops said they were hosted from Dubai.
