  • Durgapur: A Durgapur court on Saturday granted bail to BJP’s Burdwan-Asansol candidate and former state unit president Dilip Ghosh on an FIR against him for describing Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee as being of “doubtful parentage”. Ghosh was censored by the Election Commission for his comment.

Ghosh surrendered before the ACJM Durgapur and sought bail. The govt pleader did not oppose it.

On March 26, Ghosh had asked Banerjee to decide who her father was.“She goes to Goa and becomes Goa’s daughter; she goes to Tripura and says she is Tripura’s daughter; this is not right,” he had said.

On April 1, the EC had condemned Ghosh’s statements and “censured” him for his “misconduct” and “strictly warned him to remain careful in his public utterances”. The EC also asked BJP president J P Nadda to urge party functionaries not to make statements like Dilip’s that violated the model code of conduct.

Kajal Das, a Durgapur-based TMC worker, lodged an FIR against Ghosh at Durgapur Police station under IPC sections 506/509. These relate to “word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman”.

Speaking to reporters, Ghosh said: “Wherever I go, I am welcomed with cases. Even here, a case has been filed in my name.”

Burdwan-Durgapur TMC candidate Kirti Azad said: “Je maa ke apaman kare tar court ei jawa uchit (court should be the only resort for people who insult their mothers).”
