KOLKATA: A 36-year-old garment trader threw acid at his wife at Ashokenagar in North 24 Parganas on Thursday, suspecting that she was having an extra-mrital affair. The woman is under treatment at a Habra hospital with severe burn injuries. Police arrested the garment trader.
According to local sources, the couple got married around six years ago. They have a two-and-a-half-year-old son.
“The man suspected that his wife was having an affair and the issue with someone and the couple often fought over issue,” said a neighbour. On Thursday, when the woman was typing something on her mobile phone, the man wanted to see it. An altercation ensued when she refused. Suddenly, the man brought a bottle of acid and poured it on her, said sources. Locals later rescued her and took her to the hospital.
The man was remanded in police custody for three days.
