  • Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers on Saturday stopped the convoy of Congress leader and Baharampur candidate Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in Murshidabad, raising “go back” slogans. The police tried to stop the TMC supporters, resulting in an altercation. The Congress and CPI(M) sharply criticised the incident which comes three days after the sitting MP was allegedly attacked by TMC goons in the constituency.

On Saturday, when Chowdhury’s convoy entered the Nowda area in Murshidabad district – which falls under the Baharampur constituency – TMC supporters started protesting and resorted to sloganeering. Congress supporters were allegedly attacked and beaten up in the melee even as the West Bengal Congress chief remained in his car. The police tried to restrain the TMC men, but in vain.

Later, Chowdhury approached the Election Commission of India with a complaint. “This is a planned attack on me. Their party supremo attacked me at her rally. After that, they planned to heckle me here and the police stood as mute spectators.”

Speaking to reporters, Congress spokesperson Soumya Aich said, “Sometimes the Trinamool protests around Adhir Chowdhury, knowing that their defeat is certain. The people will give a befitting reply to this in the ballot.”

CPI(M) leader Bikash Bhattacharya too slammed the ruling party’s stance. “The TMC is attacking Adhir Chowdhury who is standing firmly fighting against the BJP. This proves how honest the TMC is in its fight against the BJP. They are acting as a friend of the BJP.”
