Wastage due to faulty valves adds to Behala water woes

Kolkata: Amidst the scorching heat, Behala is grappling with the dual challenge of water scarcity and wastage.
The installation of air valves along James Long Sarani (JLS), a crucial thoroughfare in Behala, has led to the wastage of thousands of gallons of potable water, adding to the water woes of residents. Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) had installed these air valves to regulate water pressure by releasing trapped air and ensure a steady supply by maintaining the pressure within the pipelines.
However, instead of releasing air as intended, these valves are spewing out water and affecting residents of JLS, where the valves are located close to the residential areas.
Residents, like Samik Dutta, vented outrage and labelled such wastage during the crisis as ‘criminal’.It has been alleged that despite complaints to KMC and local councillors, the issue persists. A KMC water supply department official admitted that greater caution should had been exercised in selecting the valve locations and vowed to address the issue and ensure swift repairs to check further loss.
As per experts, failure to release air can result in damage of pipes. Officials acknowledge the challenge posed by the significant water loss. Despite attempts to salvage some water by the locals, the long-standing issue of leakage persists since their installation.
