Kolkata: Breaking his silence on the arrest of 26/11 suspect-turned-approver Rajaram Rege for carrying out a recce of his house and office, TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday attacked BJP, claiming: “They raided my helicopter using the I-T department and even plotted to kill me two days ago. However, I am not afraid of them or for my life...As long as I have the support of the masses, nothing can happen to me.”
Addressing rallies in Jangipur and Murshidabad, Banerjee said: “They have done everything possible to intimidate us. BJP even used a section of the judiciary against me. Today, that same judge is contesting on a BJP ticket. Earlier, criminals would go to jail based on the verdict delivered by judges. Now, the judges are exiting the judiciary to join the thieves. They sent ED and CBI after me and didn’t even spare my wife or parents.”
Kolkata Police’s STF questioned Rege’s wife. Cops said they also questioned four locals, including two taxi drivers with whom he had travelled between April 18 and 20, when the alleged recces were conducted.
Cops said they had also sent Rege’s phone for forensic tests. “He has deleted most items. But there are some details of calls made and received from call centres in Sector V and other IT firms,” said a police officer.
