  • The National Commission for Women (NCW) has written a letter to West Bengal DGP seeking a report on TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee’s recent remarks against BJP Malda Dakshin candidate Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury.

In an ‘X’ post on Wednesday, the NCW condemned Banerjee’s remarks and asked the DGP to send a report on the action taken over the incident within four days from receiving its letter.

“NCW’s attention has been drawn to a Twitter post dated April 24, 2024, wherein TMC party leader Mr Abhishek Banerjee made derogatory remarks towards Ms Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhary, known as ‘Nirbhoy Didi’, for her initiative in establishing the Nirbhoy Gram in Malda…Hon’ble chairperson NCW Rekha Sharma has written a letter to the DGP of the state to submit an action taken report within four days,” it wrote.

While addressing a public meeting at Kaliachak in Malda district on Wednesday, Banerjee slammed BJP candidate Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhary, who is known as ‘Nirbhaya Didi’ as she has been actively involved in rehabilitating rape victims and building toilets for women.

Banerjee said, “The BJP candidate hereis roaming around in a car and claiming to be Nirbhaya didi. But she is not nirbhaya. She is cruel, shameless, missing in action and a failed leader. You are representative of a party which deprives, deceives, tortures and exploits people.”

Meanwhile, West Bengal minister and TMC leader Chandrima Bhattacharya wrote to the NCW seeking action against Leader of Opposition in state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari for allegedly using derogatory words against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

In her letter, Bhattacharya wrote, “Suvendu Adhikari has time and again used derogatory words and filthy remarks for our CM Mamata Banerjee.” “…We are surprised as to how such irresponsible comments can be dished out by a person against a woman leader and a CM. Moreover, such comments simply go unchecked without any cognizance being taken by NCW authorities. Therefore, we urge upon you to take immediate action against Shri Adhikari…,” her letter stated.
