  • Kolkata: Nearly the whole of Salt Lake, New Town, large parts of Sonarpur and some pockets in north and south Kolkata had a blackout on Thursday evening following a snag in a transmission line that tripped power supply. Initial probe into the tripping pointed to overheating due to the skyrocketing temperature and load demand.

“Around 9.40 pm, a fault in the 220 KV transmission line at Subhasgram led to the tripping of two transformers at WBSEDCL’s Kasba substation. This plunged the entire Salt Lake, including the IT hub at Sector V, into darkness,” said a WBSEDCL official.

Outage was also reported from CESC areas like Dum Dum, Baguiati, Lake Town in the north, Mominpur and Garia in the south. In central Kolkata, the outage happened twice at night. In the rest of Kolkata, people suffered a power cut lasting a few seconds as the power system appeared to trip and reset.

A WBSEDCL official said one transformer was revived in 10 minutes, which enabled power to be restored to most IT offices in Sector V and some parts of Salt Lake and New Town. “Work is underway to address the snag in the other transformer,” he said.

Though the outage in Sector V lasted over 10 minutes, most IT and ITeS offices that were in operation at night managed to evade any problem as they had uninterrupted power backup for critical operations.

Power officials said they will look into measures to address similar incidents.
