• Day temperature to further rise by 1-3°C over next 3 days in West Bengal; heat wave conditions expected to intensify: IMD

  • There is no respite in sight, with forecasts predicting a gradual increase in the day time temperatures by 1-3°C over the next three days in both Gangetic and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal.

    The humidity levels are expected to remain low, ranging between 20-40 per cent during the afternoons across the state.

    Meanwhile, on Thursday, scorching temperatures gripped Kolkata as the city recorded a maximum temperature of 41°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heatwave conditions across the region.

    Three districts have been kept on red alert (danger) by MeT officials for severe heatwave on Thursday — East Midnapore, West Burdwan and West Midnapore. From Friday, Bankura and Jhargram too are expected to come under red alert for heatwave conditions.

    In the rest of the southern districts, such as North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Purulia, Jhargram, Bankura, East Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia, an orange alert (prepare) for heat wave has been sounded on Thursday. The heatwave conditions or severe heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in southern districts till Monday next week.

    Meanwhile, on Thursday, Panagarh, Burdwan, Bankura and Midnapore recorded maximum temperature of 43 degrees Celsius, while Canning, Malda, Purulia, Asansol, Diamond Harbour, Berhampur recorded 42 degree Celsius maximum during daytime.

    A red alert has also been sounded in North Bengal, North Dinajpur and Malda for heatwave conditions till Friday. The IMD issued an orange alert for heat waves in South Dinajpur and a yellow alert for hot and humid conditions in Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar.

    Darjeeling is also experiencing a slight rise in temperature, around 25 degrees Celsius during the daytime. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Darjeeling witnessed light rain along with thunder and the maximum temperature dipped to 23 degrees Celsius. The night temperature is hovering around 14 degrees Celsius. Kalimpong on Thursday recorded a maximum temperature of 26.5 degrees Celsius, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar touched 37 degrees Celsius and Malda peaked at 41 degrees Celsius.
