  • About 71.84 per cent polling was recorded till 5 pm on Friday in the three constituencies of West Bengal – Darjeeling, Raiganj, and Balurghat – where voting was held in the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls.

The polling percentage in Raiganj was 71.87 per cent, and it was 71.41 per cent in Darjeeling. Balurghat registered the highest voter turnout in the state at 72.30 per cent.

Meanwhile, about 411 complaints of minor nature were lodged with the Election Commission (EC) in the state on Friday. The BJP accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of voter intimidation, booth rigging, and flouting electoral norms.

Reacting to the complaints, an EC official said, “Polling was peaceful and there was no report of any untoward incident from anywhere in the parliamentary constituencies.”

In the second phase, sitting Balurghat MP and BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar is contesting against veteran TMC leader and state minister Biplab Mitra. Earlier in the day, Majumdar was seen engaging in an altercation with people outside a polling booth. Majumdar claimed a BJP worker was beaten up outside the booth and TMC workers were roaming within 100 metres of the polling premises. He further said that TMC workers shouted ‘Go Back’ slogans at him.

“The police are doing nothing. TMC workers within 100 metres of the booth are shouting slogans. Our booth agent was beaten up. The TMC is indulging in hooliganism to win the election,” alleged Majumdar.

He said a complaint has been lodged with the EC against the TMC. The poll panel has asked the administration to submit an action-taken report on the incident at the earliest.

The TMC, however, denied the allegations and claimed that Majumdar along with the central forces were intimidating voters outside the polling booth.

A total of 47 candidates were in the fray in the second phase, with 51.17 lakh people eligible to exercise their franchise across 5,298 polling stations in the three constituencies. A total of 272 companies or 27,200 personnel of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) along with 12,983 state police personnel were deployed in the second phase.
