  • Kolkata: In the next three to four years, New Town and its neighbourhood areas will get an integrated waste management system, starting from door-to-door waste collection to having electric vehicles for waste collection and recycling.

In March, it was announced that New Town had been chosen as one of the 18 cities for the CITIIS 2.0 programme under the ministry of housing and urban affairs.Out of nearly Rs 1,500 crore funds, New Town is expected to receive around Rs 135 crore to overhaul its solid waste management system.

“Much effort was given to prepare the proposal. I am very happy that New Town has been included in the programme," said former NKDA chairman Debashis Sen. Earlier, New Town could not take part in the first CITIIS challenge in which 12 cities were selected.

Officials said that as per plans, each of the three Action Areas of the township will have waste processing and recycling plants. New Town presently generates around 85 tonne of waste daily but the amount will increase nearly three times as the neighbourhood areas, under the NKDA and Hidco, have been included under the solid waste integration plan.

Officials said that the idea was to have zero landfill dumping where no waste will reach the dumping ground.
