  • Kolkata: A day after the death of a Congress functionary in the city, reportedly after he got engaged in an argument with his neighbours regarding electricity theft, the Kolkata Police said it will relaunch its special anti-hooking drive with concerned agencies — especially the CESC — from this weekend.

The drive will include specific pockets across Garden Reach, Ekbalpore, Metiabruz and Watgunge which have a history of this crime.

In 2022 too, an attempt to murder was reported from the same Harshi Street where the deceased Imanuddin, used to reside. In that case too, just like the recent one, enmity developed over electricity theft between the attacker—Md Shahid who was stealing and Md Wasim— who had protested against the same.

Cops claimed that with another fracas being reported from the Port area on the same lines; such a drive has become a necessity. Just like last year, each raid will lead to an FIR, said cops. It has been primarily decided that the detective department, the port division and headquarter force of KP will combine forces and launch the campaign against power theft.

According to locals of both Narkeldanga and Port area, they had started receiving electricity bills which they felt were highly inflated. This continued for a few weeks before locals suspected that their electricity was being illegally stolen.
