  • Kolkata: “If the governor has an iota of conscience left he should publicly apologise,” Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said on Saturday, adding that “People in Bengal will boycott Raj Bhavan till he (governor CV Ananda Bose) holds the post.”

Governor Bose, who left for Kochi on Friday, a day after a Raj Bhavan staffer complained to police that she was molested by the governor on two occasions, did not issue any fresh statement in this regard nor did he respond to any texts. He has consistently denied the allegations as “malicious, frivolous and a false narrative engineered for character assassination with a political motive”. Before leaving for Kochi, he had issued a statement prohibiting police and state minister Chandrima Bhattacharya (who spoke on the issue) from entering Raj Bhavan.

Kolkata Police, however, set up an eight-member SIT and entered Raj Bhavan on Friday to conduct a probe.

Speaking on the issue, Banerjee said, “Who is he to boycott(police and the minister)? Instead, people of Bengal will boycott Raj Bhavan as long as he is there in the post. You are the one against whom allegations have been made, and you are saying I will boycott.”

Banerjee said, “For argument’s sake, even if we believe what you say, then why did you leave Bengal. Why this cowardice? When Sandeshkhali happened, you went there with the media in tow. The mask has now slipped from his face. People of Bengal will boycott Raj Bhavan and only BJP functionaries will go there, after all it’s an extension of their party office.”

He added, “Does the young girl who complained have no honour? Just because she is poor. There should be CCTV footage in Raj Bhavan. If the governor is clean why is he not releasing the footage. Instead of preaching, he should come clean.”
