  • Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to procure advanced equipment to revamp its solid waste management system. Among the machines that officials plan to bring are 2,000-litre capacity suction-cum-jetting machines, 2,000-litre water sprinkler machines, hydraulic trucks and excavators, hook loaders, cesspool emptier and other equipment for cleaning and disposing daily generated waste in Salt Lake and Rajarhat-Gopalpur.

The authorities in its annual budget for 2024-25 fiscal have stressed on developing a robust waste management system for all its 41 wards.Officials said regular monitoring by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had made the waste collection, transport and processing system important. For this, the authorities are planning to utilize some funds from the 15th Finance Commission as per govt guidelines for procurement of bins and different mechanical waste collection equipment.

The old suction-jetting machine is being used to clean drainage lines and the water sprinkler machine is being used to spray water on the road to suppress dust, particularly in winter.

The officials are also working on plans to procure new waste carrying trucks, replacing the old and abandoned ones. Plans are on to procure a 10-wheeler hydraulic dumper having a carrying capacity of not less than 14 cubic metres for transporting solid waste collected from different locations to Dhapa. The authorities also plan to procure cesspool emptier, which are used for storing liquid waste

Now, about 450 tonne of waste is generated daily in the entire BMC area.
