• Widen road, repair pavement: KP

  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police has requested the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and the KMDA to immediately widen the main carriageway and carry out the repair of footpaths over the Shantinagar culvert on the eastern flank (south-bound) of EM Bypass near Chingrighata crossing to prevent any untoward incident.

The width of the road at Chingrighata is constricted because of the culvert on a canal and the Chingrighata flyover that takes up one flank of the Bypass.

Moreover, the footpath is blocked on both sides for months now, locals said.

“Those trying to reach the Chingrighata bus stop are unable to take the footpath as it is not fit for use. Both approaches are broken,” said a senior officer at Lalbazar, while assuring that the cops were trying to address the issues.

The commissioner of police, Vineet Goyal, has sought the technical help of IIT Kharagpur and experts like Bhargab Maitra to help in this project. While senior officers carried out a detailed on-ground inspection in the past three days, a joint inspection has now been proposed with officials from KMC and KMDA along with police and the IIT experts.

A discussion on this was carried out during the district committee meeting — attended by all agencies — a few days back. Locals claimed it was not possible to follow all traffic rules, unless the footpath was restored.
