  • India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert (be aware) for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind (30-40 kmph) in all districts of southern Bengal on Wednesday and Thursday.

The IMD stated that a cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh and its surrounding areas extends up to 1.5 km above the mean sea level and is causing strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal. The maximum temperature is very likely to fall further by 2-4 degrees with no large change thereafter.

On Tuesday, IMD issued an orange alert (be prepared) for heavy rain and thunderstorms in several districts of southern Bengal. There is a high chance of heavy rainfall between 7-11 cm in the districts of Jhargram, East and West Midnapore, and South 24 Parganas.

Additionally, there may be thunderstorms with gusty wind speeds of 50-60 kmph in one or two places in Bankura, Birbhum, Purulia, Jhargram, East and West Midnapore, North and South 24 Parganas, and East and West Burdwan districts. The other districts in southern Bengal may also experience thunderstorms with gusty wind speeds of 40-50 Kmph in one or two places, as per the IMD.

Kolkata experienced a daytime temperature of 32.7 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, which is 3 degrees lower than the usual temperature. The maximum humidity was 98 per cent. The sky was generally cloudy throughout the day.

The IMD also issued a warning for fishermen regarding the swell waves on Tuesday. The sea near the shore is likely to have powerful waves, and low-lying areas might experience surges where seawater rushes onto the beach. These waves could be between 0.5 and 1.5 meters tall. These waves will be more intense during high tides and spring tide phases.

Kalaikunda has been experiencing temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius. However, on Tuesday, the highest temperature there was 38.3 degrees Celsius. Similarly, other areas like Panagarh, Barrackpore, Jhargram, and Burdwan also experienced high temperatures ranging from 37.5 to 38.5 degrees Celsius.

On the other hand, areas like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda are currently facing a yellow alert for thunderstorms, which may include lightning and gusty wind speeds of 40-50 kmph. These areas may also experience light to moderate rainfall which is likely to continue throughout the week.
