  • Kolkata: The health department is set to extend its non-communicable disease (NCD) clinics for children with type 1 diabetes to 10 more hospitals. The move follows the success of a pilot project in five hospitals across five districts. The initiative has been published in reputable journals, like ‘The Lancet’, as a potential model to be replicated.

Under the pilot project, juvenile diabetes patients had been getting comprehensive care.TOI had reported about the pilot project when it was launched in 2022. Now, the NCD clinic will be replicated at Burdwan Medical College, Asansol District Hospital, Tamluk Medical College, Midnapore Medical College, Rampurhat Medical College, Murshidabad Medical College, Malda Medical College, Nadia District Hospital, Darjeeling District Hospital and Purulia Medical College.

“With the expansion, 15 out of 27 health districts will be covered,” said endocrinology professor Sujoy Ghosh of IPGMER, the brain behind the project. The programme is jointly funded by the state and the health ministry.
