  • Former Indian fast bowler Irfan Pathan on Thursday campaigned for his brother Yusuf, who’s contesting from Baharampur Lok Sabha seat on a Trinamool Congress (TMC) ticket, in Murshidabad district. Yusuf is pitted against sitting MP and Congress’ state unit chief Adhir Chowdhury.

At a roadshow in Beldanga area of the district, Irfan said he was confident of his brother’s victory. “I saw huge support for my brother. He will win and will get the opportunity to do something for common people,” he said. The roadshow which started at around 2pm from Barua More concluded at Kazi Shah area of Beldanga after an hour. Thousands of TMC supporters and common people gathered in huge numbers during the programme. The Pathan brothers were also accompanied by TMC leader Abu Taher khan.

“My elder brother speaks less but works more. He has a habit of hitting sixes. Just because he was born in Gujarat, it doesn’t mean he will remain there. He has come here to work for the people and will do so,” said Irfan while addressing a rally after the roadshow. On Thursday, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee had participated in a rally in Baharampur in support of Yusuf.

Meanwhile, the Congress said that Irfan campaigning for his brother will not affect Chowdhury’s chances. Congress spokesperson Soumya Aich Roy said, “We are not concerned about who is campaigning for TMC and where. I respect Irfan Pathan as a player, but people will tell if they have accepted him as a political party leader.”

Polls will take place in Baharampur on May 13.
