  • Kolkata: A total of 36 CCTV cameras — of which some are new and a few refurbished — will be installed around Mahakaran and new Esplanade metro station in order to enhance passenger safety.

They will also serve in tracking political events on RR Avenue near Esplanade metro station. The police are also working on a detailed traffic movement plan around Esplanade and Dalhousie that will come into effect once East-West Metro services become fully-operational.

According to sources, the police proposals, include construction of foot overbridges and realignment of some traffic signals.Cops also plan to approach metro authorities and seek a wider pathway in front of Curzon Park.

The police have begun planning for the proposed Park Street station of Joka-Esplanade line.

Both Dufferin Road and Mayo Road will be affected as part of them will be cordoned off during construction work. Metro has decided to construct additional lanes to accommodate the traffic.

With pressure likely to go up on RR Avenue and Red Road and police proposing multiple road engineering (like cutting the size of roundabouts or adding a lane to the existing road, the Army has asked Kolkata Police to get their proposals technically vetted from PWD or RITES.
