• Bengal weather update: Rains likely to continue till Thursday, Kolkata may see showers today evening

  • The weather in West Bengal is likely to be devoid of extreme heat as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts rainfall across the state till Thursday.

    According to a statement by the met department, “a strong moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal due to a cyclonic circulation lies over north Bangladesh and neighbourhood at 1.5km above mean sea level, Thunderstorm with lightning along with gusty wind speed activity very likely to continue over districts of West Bengal”. “Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind at 40-50 kmph are likely to continue till Monday across Bengal,” the IMD statement reads.

    According to IMD, on Sunday, the districts of North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Howrah, Hooghly, Kolkata, Purulia, Jhargram, West Midnapore, Bankura, West Burdwan, East Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Coochbehar, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur and Malda are expected to be under a yellow alert for rain which is likely to continue till Monday. “After Monday, light to moderate rain is likely to continue in these districts, at least till Thursday,” the statement informed.

    However, the weather department has stated that there would not be any major change in the maximum temperature in the next 3 days beyond which, there may be a gradual rise by 3-4 degree Celsius across the state.

    On Saturday, Kolkata’s temperature stood at 33.8 degrees Celsius during the day, with maximum humidity at 92%. The sky remained cloudy with chances of rain in the evening or night.

    In other parts of the state, like Bankura, Sriniketan, Burdwan, Asansol, Barrackpore and Jhargram, the maximum temperature stood at around 31-34 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Krishnanagar, meanwhile, recorded a sudden dip in temperature with the mercury at 22.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday morning.
