  • Kolkata: With the rain decreasing, the mercury has already started rising in the city. The maximum temperature is likely to touch 38°C by the weekend but the Met office has ruled out a return of the heatwave soon. Parts of some western districts, however, could face hotter and more humid weather.

The maximum on Tuesday at 35°C was still about a notch below normal while the minimum surged slightly above normal.By Wednesday, the maximum day temperature could rise by a degree. The Met office has predicted a lower chance of rain in Kolkata from Wednesday but a partially cloud-covered sky will prevent the mercury from rising abruptly.

“Apart from some thundershower spells, we are not expecting any intense rain in Kolkata for now. The temperature rise will be gradual and slight. But since we have been getting below-normal temperature for about a week, it will be a bit hot,” said H R Biswas, head of weather forecast section at RMC Kolkata.
