  • Kolkata: The state higher education department has requested colleges to provide subject wise seat counts to factor in the final changes in the centralized system for undergraduate (UG) admission that is expected to be introduced from this academic session.

The govt has developed a software to facilitate the centralized process, which will be used to conduct admission to UG courses in colleges.A test run had been conducted a month ago to make authorities familiar with the new system. Some technical glitches were identified during the trial and the software has been modified.

Following the trials, some city colleges have received queries about the number of seats in each subject with an advice to immediately inform the department if there is any change since the data was last collected. While preparing the centralized admission portal, colleges were asked to provide information like the seat count, admission criteria, merit score formula and course-wise admission fees.

An admission co-coordinator of a college said: “We have shared all documents with the department for preparing this software and they conducted a test run based on the data. The latest message is to inform it about any revisions.”

Minority and autonomous colleges like St Xavier’s College, Scottish Church College and St Paul’s Cathedral Mission College have already started the admission process as they are exempted from the centralized system. Scottish Church principal Madhumanjari Mandal said: “Almost all board results have been announced and we are receiving applications. Our admission portal will be kept live till the centralized admission portal starts functioning.”

In the last two years, the centralised portal was scrapped at the eleventh hour. This time, colleges are a little more confident about the introduction of the centralized system. A college principal said: “The preparation is underway, so we are now confident that it will be introduced this time but the delay is a concern.”
