  • Kolkata: The maximum temperature in Kolkata has started crawling up towards 40°C, while the real-feel temperature touched 44°C on Thursday. However, a three-four day thundershower spell, likely to start next Monday, may bring some relief.

Kolkata’s maximum on Thursday was 36.9°C and the minimum was 29.2°C. The maximum is likely to stay around 37°C on Friday.

“The showers next week are likely to be lighter than the previous spell but the conditions are favourable for a possible nor'wester,” said RMC head of weather H R Biswas.Consistent rainfall, brought about by moisture incursions from the Bay of Bengal, is likely knock the mercury down a few notches.

While some south Bengal districts may see heatwave conditions by the end of the week, the temperature in the city is unlikely to cross 40°C. Overcast skies this week are also likely to prevent the sun’s glare causing heat-related illnesses. But southerly winds bringing clouds have increased the relative humidity in the city, contributing to hot and uncomfortable weather.

The Met added that a low-pressure system is likely to form in the Bay of Bengal, near the Andaman coast, around May 23, possibly intensifying into a depression over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea, later moving northwards and northeastwards.
