  • Kolkata: No tree is supposed to be felled on the Rabindra Sarobar complex to make way for a proposed private sports academy, a KMDA official said.

KMDA, the custodian of Rabindra Sarobar, has planned to rent out a Lake plot to a private organisation to set up a sports academy. The authority has asked the organisation to furnish in writing exactly what it plans to do on the land, said the official.

On Friday, morning walkers and environmentalists opposed to the plot handover decision attended a citizens’ meeting organized by green platform Sabuj Mancha. They decided to continue with their protest until the decision is withdrawn.

“We demand the renting out of the land to be cancelled immediately for the sake of protecting the environment on Lake premises. Otherwise, we will move for a bigger agitation,” said Sabuj Mancha general secretary Naba Dutta.

Sabuj Mancha also plans to distribute leaflets, posters and banners outside the gates of the lake and also at the KMDA office and KMC headquarters

A KMDA official said the highest authority was aware of the developments.
