  • KOLKATA: The EC on Saturday show-caused BJP's Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar for issuing a malicious advertisement which stated that "Trinamool Congress was the root of corruption".

The poll panel also censured Trinamool's Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir after finding his reply "unsatisfactory" to a show cause notice for threatening voters and opposition party workers during campaigning.

Majumdar will have to respond to the notice by 5 pm on Tuesday. The show cause followed a complaint by TMC against the publishing of the "defamatory, false and fabricated" advertisement. The notice said if the MP failed to reply, he would be penalized.

In the advertisement, Majumdar had alleged that "Bengal had become the cradle of corruption, thanks to the corrupt state govt".

In Kabir's case, BJP's Shishir Bajoria had complained to the EC about his speech on May 2 in Murshidabad where he had allegedly threatened voters.

The EC issued the notice after it prima facie found contents of Kabir's speech to be in violation of the model code of conduct. The poll panel "strongly condemned" the impugned statement made by Kabir during the rally in Kazipara in Murshidabad and censured him for the misconduct. Kabir had claimed that he had been quoted out of context by BJP.
